Job Description Job Description Description: Description The Director of Nursing is accountable for the effective delivery of competent, compassionate, and efficient care for specific patient care unit(s) on a 24-hour basis. This includes oversight for clinical operations and human resources, financial, and quality management. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Develops work processes and systems to facilitate excellent patient care outcomes and patient, staff, and physician satisfaction. Facilitates communication and ensures proper flow of information. Oversees patient flow in patient care and support areas. Ensures operational effectiveness, emphasizing cost containment without jeopardizing patient care priorities, improvement, innovation or quality of care. Partners with service-wide leadership to interpret policies and operational procedures, resolving problems related to staffing, and utilization of facilities, equipment and supplies, as required. Investigates any patient care and/or administrative problems and keeps communication open with directors, managers, and staff to ensure high employee morale and a professional, safe patient care environment Ensures the effective delivery of competent, compassionate and efficient care by monitoring and evaluating patient care processes and outcomes Facilitates shared governance at the unit level and throughout Nursing Service. Represents Altus Community Healthcare in its relationships with other health organizations, professional organizations, government and accrediting agencies. Collaborates with leaders from local institutions of higher education to provide a supportive learning environment for students of various healthcare programs. Provides support to staff during the development, implementation, and utilization of information systems that impact the delivery of patient care services within the hospital. Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance. Financial Management Participates in supplies inventory/management cost savings productivity. Works with leadership to enhance revenue production while decreasing cost and inefficiencies. Participates in supplies inventory/management/cost savings Human Resource Management Provides leadership and direction for the staff Recruits and retains competent, compassionate staff while monitoring performance standards and promoting fair labor practices. Promotes a work environment that demonstrates caring by accessibility to safe equipment and adequate supplies. Achieves performance outcomes through engagement of the nursing staff. Leads by example implementing management techniques and practices that create an environment that attracts and retains nursing staff. Mentors staff and objectively evaluate and documents performance, taking corrective action as appropriate. Completes employee performance evaluations according to established timelines. Provides professional guidance to ensure the highest quality care is available to patients and appropriate standards of care that meet national, state, and local rules and regulations Provides and develops professional leadership at the unit level in the nursing organization. Encourages and supports staff development. Maintains professional affiliations and enhances professional development to keep current in the latest healthcare trends and developments. Quality Management Operationalizes and participates in continuous quality improvement and risk management programs at the unit(s) level in a collaborative manner with multi-disciplinary colleagues. Monitors patient care operations, and related programs, initiating appropriate changes, where necessary. Responsible for nursing policy and practices, assuring their consistency with requirements specified by the Texas Nurse Practice Act and other legal and regulatory mandates. Supports quality related programs at the unit level, including but not limited to patient satisfaction with nursing, nurse satisfaction, the nursing aspects of the National Patient Safety Goals, other regulatory requirements for nursing / nurses, and the nursing aspects for specialty quality standards (e.g. critical care, disease management, etc. Demonstrates transparency with the clinical staff regarding clinical indicators. Planning and Evaluation Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer: Assists with the development of strategic plans for patient care services as a whole and specifically, for assigned areas of responsibility. Assists in the evaluation and documentation of goal achievements, issues and recommendations. Pharmacy Support – Under the direction of the consulted Registered Pharmacist Function as the facility’s pharmacy support personnel Work with the contracted pharmacist to ensure the appropriate ordering, formulary management, use of therapeutic drugs, and safeguarding of all medications used in the facility. Management of medication tracking and charting within the facility, in accordance with state law, and under the direction of the facility’s employed or contracted licensed pharmacist. Requirements: Qualifications, Education Experience, Skills EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE · Graduate of an accredited school of nursing · At least 3-5 years of Emergency Room, strongly preferred. · Previous experience with management, strongly preferred. LANGUAGE/MATH/REASONING ABILITY · Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. · Ability to write simple correspondence. · Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization · Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. · Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. · Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. · Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situation. COMPUTER SKILLS · Basic computer skills CERTIFICATE/LICENSES · Current RN license within the state of practice Current BCLS, ACLS, and PALS Certification Physical Demands Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily product/technical nature. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, pull, or otherwise move objects Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, works with the fingers, and perceives attributes of objects and materials. Physical: ascending or descending stairs, ramps and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms; maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; bending legs downward and forward by bending leg and spine; using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward; standing, particularly for sustained periods of time; using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion; raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving object horizontally from position to position; substantial movements(motion) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers in a repetitive manner Vision: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus) Work Environment • Work environment is in a comfortable indoor area and travel to all locations whenever needed. Conditions such as noise, odors, cramped workspace and/or fumes could sometimes cause discomfort. Moderate to extreme physical effort may be required such as walking, standing and lifting materials, equipment, objects and/or patients. Occasional lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs. Vision, hearing, talking and sense of touch abilities must be adequate enough to enable. one to perform tasks quickly and accurately such as: reading small print, reading from monitoring equipment, defining details, sending and receiving clear and accurate verbal communication. Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention will be needed to interpret visual, auditory and sensory inputs. May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable diseases, radiation, and disoriented or combative patients.
